I'm not privy to the national scene's live music situation anymore, but from my perspective there are certainly still many times more "trad jazz" bands than swing bands like Jonathan's. Now that I'm playing in one of the former, it's obvious why. Swing music requires an immense amount of w...

Amusingly I was just given a sack of CDs bought from an estate sale, and it contained "Jam In Music City" by the Titan Hot Five (at the time, they were a separate band and Draga/Barnhart were not in it). It's pretty sweet, but not as sweet as this discussion from 2005. Anyway, I wonder if ...

If you aren't super picky, give a listen to

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/With_Respect_to_Nat

This is the only album (that I know of) where Oscar Peterson sings. Apparently he didn't do it very often because his voice sounds EXACTLY like Nat King Cole, and I am not exaggerating one bit.

I like foobar2000 but one thing is driving me nuts which I can't seem to figure out. In almost every other DJ package you can select a song from the UI and add it to a playlist while the current song continues playing. There seem to be several f2k components for adding songs to a 'queue' playlist, b...

Basie's book had waltzes and Latin numbers. And, judging by a few CD releases, horrible arrangements of James Bond and Beatles songs. I think some musicians are afraid to change their material to accomodate audiences because they perceive it as 'selling out', artistically speaking. The problem with ...

Miller's Army Air Force recording of In the Mood has (in my opinion) better soloing than the original 78 with Tex Beneke on sax. The AAF version seems a little less square to me.

Wow those rules are mindblowing. Makes sense though if they were created to try to get rid of someone without, you know, confronting them.

See, confrontation can be useful sometimes. :D

On that tour members of LCJO (although not Marsalis) came down to Memories in Orange County and jammed with dancers. I was at the San Diego Exchange about 90 miles away at the time but I drove back up for the night, and then back down when they were done. Josh Collazo (drummer for the Campus Five, n...

If you want a hot dance band for swing era music, contact "Campus Five" on this forum. Also contact "Albert System". Both run bands that lots of dancers on the west and east coast enjoy. Hire Evan Christopher and Duke Heitger, two of the best New Orleans-style players around. The...

6) Timing -- The breaks and ending are all predictable. The thing I HATE about older songs is that I don't know when they're ending so I can apply a big finish. It's like they just stop mid-beat sometimes. As far as the end of a song, that's odd to me. Most older swing songs employ 32 bar or 12 bar...

If the song or musical phrase feels "done" when it hits an E minor chord, it's in E minor. If the song feels "done" when it hits a G chord, it's in G. Both Em and G are the same "key" in the sense that John is thinking of: One sharp, and the Em and G scales both use ide...

WMP on random play just coughed up Benny, Lionel, and Gene playing I Got Rhythm from the Carnegie Hall concert. I don't know how I missed this before, but the last thirty seconds are PURE MADNESS. Holy crap.

This is a way-out-of-left-field suggestion, but I think it would be cool if a syllabus for swing DJs could include talking to swing musicians to hear their take on music and playing for dancers. You assume that jazz musicians have any more idea about playing for dancers than DJ's do. Most don't kno...
