I find the best way to get people used to swing-era music is maybe by mixing up DJs. I know Vancouver is a very post swing-era type of scene. But when I DJ I usually DJ with someone who is post swing-era, since I am all about the swing-era. And everyone has liked it thus far because they get a bit o...

I am not saying that everybody has to like wedding DJs. But, there are plenty of weddings out there that want/need YMCA and its ilk played; plenty of weddings are completly content to have "In the Mood" or "Jump, Jive, and Wail" be there token swing songs. Unless it was swing da...

I agree. Harrison this smells like a DJ battle to me. You and me head to head (and perhaps a couple more PAC NW DJ's who want to straddle the under 30/over 30 line)? Bring it, name the time and place, and I'll be there. It should be a OOJ night I think. Something like Boo and Brenda vs. Harrison an...

Jazz Anecdotes is by far my favorite. It's funny because it was almost the first jazz book I ever read and now that I'm reading many more, I discovered that J.A. got many of its items from earlier books. So it's kind of like a "best of", at least humor-wise. I just bought it for 3.50$ off...

For instance, the most popular weekly Austin event has the worst DJs out of all the Lindy-oriented events in Austin. Matt Jones (who DJs nationally) DJs in the exact same venue on a different night every week, and they don't ever get half the crowd. Chicago's most popular venue "back in the da...

Now that I own my own laptop, one thing I'm slowly working on is organizing a database of all the music in my collection. There's many things like lenght, period, artist, bpm, you name it, it's there. My goal is to be able to do a query in case I'm stuck for a song. It will also have information on ...

I too try to play something I know they would enjoy. Same goes for any type of jam for a person, it's something I know they would enjoy, not just a good all around b-day jam song.

I have only been paid once to DJ, but the next day I went and bought 3 new cds with that money. If I ever get paid again, it's going towards CDs.

One thing I enjoy as a DJ is getting feedback from other DJs. Kevin T.'s been really good about helping me along with things (Kevin, check out the last 10 thread, you'll see 3 new cds I got thanks to that CD you made me). I always appreciate people's criticism/compliments. I want to be a really good...

Swifty...funniest....story....EVER! I have had a lot of requests for latin music. There's been a few times when I'm DJing any good swing song and they'll say "Hey, can you play some swing music?" I say "This is swing music". They say "No, I want real swing music, you know, l...
