Re: Bootlegging Live Acts
Have you ever encountered a situation were you were given an unreleased recording by an artist as DJ material? Like I've said on the Top 25 thread, I just received a few gigs' worth of live stuff from Jonathan Stout, Josh Collazo, The Dream Team (much of which ended up on the Live at the Lindy Bing...

Ditto on the Shure mics. I think the ones the CSDS had were in the ballpark of $300, but I am not sure because I wasn't around when they were bought. Take good care of them and they will last a long time. be sure to have plenty of 9V batteries on hand. The Shure mics we used at CSDS sucked them dry ...

Apple Gear + DJ-1800
I spun ORLX on a 1 gHz 12" PowerBook with a factory sound card and a 15GB iPod for cueing, previewing, and backup. DJ-1800 is the DJ app to use if you're on a Mac (and if not, well...that's another thread). Basically it's a Denon DN-1800F setup on your desktop: http://www.musiccitymotion.com/dr...

Swing music, or 'Swing' as a noun I think of as the prevailing style of jazz music played from the late 1920s to the early to mid 1940s. It is usually but not always played by a big band ensemble. It is jazz music that is made for dancing. 'Swing' as a verb is the ratio of accented to unaccented not...

I don't really DJ all that much anymore but when I did I was fine with a comp and some travel expenses. But I am doing a lot of graphics/ad/promo/branding work for events like Showdown, MC2, and others. There are plenty of NFP organizations in the scene as well as there are plenty for-profit, but bo...

If it were under those pretenses that I agreed to the gig, then of course I would play it. If the person signing my check gave me a mix CD or a couple of other discs to spin and made an imperative, then I suppose I would fit them in somewhere. If not, I don't carry the stuff in my book, my Powerbook...

I do think an exchange should reflect the city, or at least the image we would want to project. Currently, we're in the planning stages for KCLX 2005. One of our goals to showcase our city's jazz history and we would like the music to reflect that. That may change for late night venues, but that's ...

My advice - use as many local DJs and bands as you possibly can. Exchanges are really about showing off your scene and providing for your dancers first. Happy locals make happy exchanges. I came in from Minneapolis last year to spin at KCLX because I play lots of Kansas City music and it seemed to ...
