So...now that people have had the chance to listen to it...how's the sound quality? I've already got, proportionally to the size of my binder, a lot of Ellington. If I'm going to be getting hundreds of so-so-quality yet swinging tunes, I think for now I'll stick with the ones I've got. However, if it's great swinging stuff that's got great sound, too, I might throw down $ I don't really have just to make sure I get my hands on it for the future (and possibly can put aside some of my old discs to make room for these).
I gotta disagree here, I got the 40-disc set (which can be found on Ebay for ~$60, btw) and was disappointed with the sound quality. Granted, there is no crackling usually associated with lo-fi recordings, but that is because they have applied (in my opinion) excessive noise reduction, which cuts out a lot of the brightness of the original. However, this is without a doubt the easiest and cheapest way to get the complete early Ellington. So if you're not picky about the sound issue, it's probably worth it.
by the way, here's the rundown of that 40 cd big band set:
two discs:
-duke
-basie
-goodman
-glenn miller
-tommy dorsey
-harry james
-artie shaw
-woody herman
-cab calloway
-krupa
-kenton
-chick webb
-lunceford
-erskine hawkins
-fletcher henderson
-charlie barnet
-benny carter
-bunny berigan
-louis armstrong
one disc:
-diz
-lionel hampton
-ellington again
i think i'll buy this; a lot of these artists i don't have anything by. although there will definitely be plenty of overlap with my existing selection. whatever, i'll give away stuff i don't need.
yak.

Louis Armstrong, 12 of the 13 CDs Classics Chronological released for the years 1925-1940, for 20 euros each box set.
45€80 ($56.80) total mailed to the continental U.S. I came REALLY REALLY close to buying them, but I finally convinced myself I have other box set priorities at the same price. I decided to let it go and tell you all about it.
The first set includes 6 of these 7 (I don't know which didn't make it, but I'd imagine it's "In New Orleans 26-27"): this, this, this, this, this, this, and this.
The second set includes: this, this, this, this, this, and this.
Alternate links to the full-price pages: 1, 2
You'd have 11 left to find elsewhere if you wanted to collect them all, including the one above. They go up to 1953.
I've noticed Classics CDs don't tend to drop below $10 per disc; I've never seen them sold as a box set before. Interesting.
If you need help navigating the site (it's in French...though Babelfish and Dictionary.com will do you wonders!), look for me on Yahoo Messenger. Add a 3 to my screen name here and there you have mine over there. I'm online between 3AM EST / midnight PST and 11AM EST / 8AM PST. Or PM me...but I can't give you very fast results that way.
Nyah nyah, I snatched up Petite Fleur there for 4€10 ($5.09).

This may already be known, but what the hey. I was ripping the CDs from the box set and found that several of the CDs have the same track listing as Chronogical Classics sets. For example, the 2nd Basie CD has the same listing as Basic CC 1943-1945. The 2nd Ellington CD has the same listing as Ellington CC 1944-1945. And the two Harry James CDs are the same as Harry James CC 1937-1939 and CC 1939.Yakov wrote:by the way, here's the rundown of that 40 cd big band set:
(stuff deleted)
I don't own any of those CCs, so I don't know if the sound quality differs much. If it doesn't, I (and everyone else who owns this box set) essentially have a bunch of CCs for $1.50 each.[/list]
Many of you are already on the Mosaic mailing list, but if you're not...
