Is there a way to mute or perma-read a thread/topic?

Is there a way to mute or perma-read a thread/topic?

There are some topics that I am simply not interested in (they may be interesting to others, of course). These topics flag the "new message!" alert on the forum, so I go to the forum full of hope, and find nothing of interest. :(

As a stop-gap, I tried adding people to my "foes" list, but:
a) that seems like a needlessly big hammer (what if they post something interesting in *another* topic?)
b) it doesn't actually work--the topic still gets flagged as having new content (even though I cannot see the new content) :(

So...is there an "ignore all updates to thread" feature? (Maybe in the next version of the forum software?)
