Requests during band breaks

Some of my swing friends think that it's incredibly tacky to give the DJ a request during a band break - kind of a way of saying the person doesn't appreciate what the band is playing. This is a pretty relaxed scene, and I'm sure some people don't consider that when making requests. On the other hand, the people are paying good money to attend the event, so perhaps they should be entitled to make such requests. I'm still making up my mind about this. Is there protocol as far as making requests during band breaks?

There is none. Unless the person request something the band has played. Then that is a no-no. I generally don't take requests during band breaks. It just simplifies things.

Make them all you want, if they are good they might get played... ;)

I don't mind mind taking requests at any point or time, it's just a verbal cue to what I can also see visually in the crowd. Whether I take that one verbal cue heavily or not is another matter.
