I don't see the angle in being snobby about requests. If it is really embarrassing, you just announce it as a request. If it really does not fit, I tell them outright (like the guy who always requests that I close with a salsa song, I just tell him no).

The average new dancer never got the memo that Frank Sinatra, Louis Prima, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy are lame and only losers dance to their music. Hell, I never got the memo either.

I agree with the fact that it's okay from time to time to play some really horrible requests. I didn't know anything about good music when I started and I loved it when that stuff came on. But as I stuck around and gradually listened to the other music being played, I got more interested and drawn into it. It's a balance and you'll never please everybody, but you do your best.
