Lionel Hampton on drums

In Norma Miller's book, Swingin' at the Savoy, she mentions that Lionel Hampton's first love was drums (p. 114). I don't think I've ever heard him play drums. Are there any songs or CDs with him on drums? Thanks.

'77 Vintage, on the French Black & Blue Records label, has Lionel playing vibes, drums and piano, and singing too (although not all on the same song :)).

It's a pretty good CD, I especially like the version of "Birth Of The Blues" on it, but it was recorded in 1977 and has a pretty modern sound. So if you're looking for some him playing classic swing with drums, this isn't it...

He plays drums on quite a few tracks. Just check the track info on the
cds to determine which songs. He plays drums on others' cds too, see

I have a DVD of a Buddy Rich concert from 1973. In special features there is an appearance by Buddy on the game show "What's My Line?"

Anyway, after it had been determined that the mystery guest was a drummer, Soupy Sales guessed Lionel Hampton. I always thought that he was way off base - Hamp wasn't a drummer.
