Major Holley

#1 Post by RaleighRob » Mon Dec 01, 2003 3:08 pm

I just stumbled upon a nice version of "All of Me" recorded by Roy Eldridge on Little Jazz and the Jimmy Ryan All-Stars. It clocks in around 206 bpm and features Major Holley on the 2nd verse singing in unison w/ his bass.

Can anyone recommend other danceable tunes that feature Major Holley this way?

Mostly danceable -- I play "Tomorrow" a lot, esp. on rainy days, and "Close Your Eyes."

I also own Mule, which is more boppish but is still very danceable.

Come to think of it, very few of the Major Holley stuff I own doesn't feature him singing along with his bass -- that was more or less the signature style he helped pioneer.

That's the Mule CD I mentioned above. Good stuff.

I have Excuse Me Ludwig, Major Holley's other CD in The Definitive Black & Blue Sessions series. There are several swinging cuts ("Excuse Me Ludwig", "Lamb Stew For Slam" and "Like Someone In Love" are my favorites), but I haven't played any for dancers yet.
