Tips for gloomy music

#1 Post by Avoozl » Tue Sep 29, 2015 10:07 am

Hello collective hive mind of DJ's!

I'm in search for some gloomy music for them lonely days I'm in a blue mood and was hoping you could help me out with some more ideas.
Not for dancing, but just for listening to. Preferrably 20's to 30's.

I want the haunting, moody, dismal, spooky, that might also fit in a ghost cartoon with Betty Boop or Flip the Frog.
Suggestive without being sultry. Think slow drag in a room full of Dementors...

This is what I've come up with so far. They're not all a perfect match, but still in the range of what I'm after.
  • Black and Tan Fantasy - Duke Ellington
Blues in the Dark - Jimmy Rushing
    Delta Bound - Howard Rosetta
East St. Louis Toodle-Oo - Duke Ellington
    Egyptian Fantasy - Sidney Bechet
    Gloomy Sunday - Billie Holiday
The Goon Drag - Sam Price
    Hell's Bells - Jimmie Lunceford
Minnie The Moocher - Cab Calloway
    The Mooche - Duke Ellington
The New East St. Louis Toodle-Oo - Duke Ellington
    Prohobition Blues - The Missourians
Saint James Infirmary - Louis Armstrong
The Skeleton in the Closet - Louis Armstrong
    Strange Fruit - Billie Holiday

I humbly suggest the two Hallowe'en threads we already have as good places to go hunting for gloomy, spooky, creepy music:

Also, if this were the olden days, Reuben or Falty would pipe up right about now with something about Ray Brown making them gloomy. Can you tell I've been reading the archive again?

Tried to search the forums, but wasn't as successful with finding the correct thread.

Thank you!
