Dance Venue paying royalties for music

#1 Post by kcorcoran » Tue Apr 28, 2015 11:42 am

I am new to this site and could look through ALL the previous posts to find an answer to my question, but......this is easier. My question has to do with the legalities of a non-profit community dance club joining ASCAP or BMI or one of the others in order to make sure royalties are paid for the music that is played. Anyone have knowledge/experience in this area?

I think you'll find that most people are wary of trying to give any form of legal advice online. Your best bet is to talk to a local dance organizer or studio owner. (FWIW, I know one of our local lindy dances is covered under the umbrella of the venue they use, which is a nationally recognized dance studio chain. I don't know how other dances do it.)

As for finding old threads: I recommend google.com and "site:swindjs.com ASCAP" or some such similar searches. That particular one dug up, for instance, these threads:

http://www.swingdjs.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=760
http://www.swingdjs.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1083
http://www.swingdjs.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2349

Mostly, they're people speculating and providing anecdotes, which is pretty much all you can hope for on a forum like this one when it comes to legal topics.

Good luck!

There are definitely special rules with regards to relaxation of the rules if its a non profit.
