I have 2 questions regarding this Trombone player.

1) Has anybody got any of his stuff (sessions he led OR soloed on extinsively) that they would reccommend?

2) Does anyone know what song is being played during his mini bio segment on the "A Great Day in Harlem" Video?

Is that clip available somewhere on-line?

Vic Dickenson? A Basie player from the 30s...highly recommend the Jazz Archives compilation of his.

Also another great album he is featured on is The Jazz Giants with Lester Young. (I believe the personnel is Jo Jones, Teddy Wilson, Vic, Lester, Sweets, and a couple others that are escaping me at the moment)

I actually bought the jazz archives CD last week. It's very solid. Some great bands he was involved with. The guy can play trombone faster, better and cleaner than anyone I've ever heard.

Although I'll admit my trombone knowledge isn't very extensive.

That Jazz Archives cd looks interesting, although i think it overlaps some with Breaks, Blues & Boogies. But you'll are right that he was with some tight bands. I got an Eddie Heywood cd because of that.

Dickenson also plays sideman on a ton of recordings. He sings one of his songs on Buddy Tate's Jive at Five. Although he doesn't sing on the recording he did with Bobby Hackett, Live at the Roosevelt Grille. The Bobby Hackett sessions, i think there are 3 or 4 volumes are nice examples of small group swing. they even have eddie condon as MC.
