1948 - low point for swing

#1 Post by anton » Mon Mar 23, 2009 9:49 am

I've been preparing a chronological DJ set when I noticed this. There seem to be very few good tracks from 1948. A jumpy track by Wynonie Harris and two so-so tracks by Erskine Hawkins and that's about it.

Do you have any good tracks from 1948?

There was an AFM recording ban than was in effect for most of 1948.
Will big bands ever come back?

Aha... I knew about the 1942-1943/1944 ban, but never heard about the 1948 one before.

So, it's the good old AF of M that are destroying my chronological DJ sets... :x

I think it was 10 months long.

Here's the boss of the AFM - James C. Petrillo

More than you will ever need to know! I'm playing it now. Done - not worth the time.

The web site contains much very esoteric and detailed material on recorded sound and music.

1948 seems to be rather heavy on jump blues and proto-bebop. You might find some live recordings and I think singers were excluded from the ban. Here's a few discographies that list 1948 and there's not much there.

http://www.depanorama.net/48.htm There are no studio sessions for 1948 because of a union recording ban.

Notice that many of the dates are in December of 1948.

According to-

http://www.arsc-audio.org/conference/au ... mp3/31.m3u

the ban/strike wound up in December.

there must have been some indie labels that signed with the AFM rather than site out a strike.

Singers were not in the union, so they could record. Harmonica players were exempt from the AFM ban b/c JCP said so, according to the audio link.

If it helps, I have these listed as good dance tracks from 1948:

Deacon's Hop - Big Jay McNeely
Long John Blues - Dinah Washington
Back Street - Eddie Chamblee
Fat Meat 'n Greens - Edgar Hayes & His Stardusters
Cornbread - Erskine Hawkins & His Orchestra
Hey, Mr. Gatemouth - Gatemouth Moore
Plug For Cliff - Hal Singer
Neck Bones - Hal Singer Sextet
Hot Biscuits - Jay McShann Orchestra
Fine Brown Frame - Nellie Lutcher
Ain't She Mean? - The Treniers

Mostly rhythm & blues, as was fitting of the era.

I noticed a lack of music from 1948 as well. The only two I have are:

Here's a little girl from Jacksonville - Blue Lu Barker

Big Ben Bounce - Ted Heath

(Thanks for your lists Rayned and Trev)

if you go to jazz-on-line and search for "1948" you will get a page full of hits, mostly vocal and/or jump.

Thank you all for the hints! Hopefully I can find some of them on e-music before tonight. I can post my chronological DJ set afterwards if you are interested.
