Box sets we want to see

I would dearly love to see some monster box sets similar to the Hank Williams set that the Country Western Hall of Fame released, or Bear Family's 13 CD Bob Wills monstrosity. What I would like to see;

Complete Casa Loma Orchestra (transciptions and studio recordings)
Complete Benny Carter
Complete Noble Sissle

More that I can't think of right now.

Suggestions?

i'm with rayned, but barring the use of deloreans and 1.21 gigawatts of energy, i'd love to see mosaic or jsp sets of:
chick webb complete
jimmie lunceford complete
lucky millinder/mills blue rhythm band complete
louis armstrong and his all-stars fifties concerts and radio transcripts

and i'd be seriously annoyed if a set appeared of ella's complete verve/pablo output, because i know i'd end up buying it and have 20 duplicate discs all of a sudden. come to think of it, any complete bg sets would annoy me for the same reason.

Interesting thread. In thinking about this, I have to say that the
majority of what has been mentioned above is way beyond what proper or
mosaic are going to do.

For Benny Carter - how do want a complete set? Do you want every
recording that Benny played, arranged or conducted on? His recording
legacy is well over 50 years!!! Who is going to buy a 100+ CD set of
Benny Carter recordings? I love the man, but that is a wee bit much.

For Benny Goodman, the volume of recordings from 1935-1945 is MASSIVE.
I have a small set of recordings of Benny under his own name from 1930
until 1950. This CD set is 20 CDs and doesn't even cover the small
groups. Mosaic did a set small group set of Capitol Goodman
recordings from 1944 to mid 1950s. That was 4 CDs.

Same trouble with most of the artists listed. The size of these
'complete' sets would be unreal. You're going to have to narrow the
criteria for 'complete' in order to get something that is marketable.

For Goodman, I only wanted the Columbia sides from 1939 - 1946 b/c thoere has never been a comprehensive reissue of those sides by Xolumbia. All hit and miss reissues for decades.

At least the Victor stuff from 1935 - 1939 made in out in chrono order on RCA/BLUEBIRD.

It's doable.

The MOSIAC set of CAPITOL stiff has only one side from 1944, right? "All the Cats Join In" Goodman didnlt move over to Capitol til 1947 so the bulk of that stuff is from 47 - 554/55, I imagine. He did a few LPs for them in the 60s...nothing to die for, but a few heavy duty tracks here and there like a great Fletchewr Henderson arrangement of THE LAMP IS LOW and one of THEM THERE EYES that he had had for years, but never recorded.

Anyway...I want those Columbias! I have the grear majority of them in one form or another, but it would be nice to dump all the mish mash reissues and especially the few here they ruined the sound with fake stereo, etc.

Like I said - do the BG Columbias in 2 boxes. It's not like it is going to cost PROPER a lot of money

I would like to see some lesser acts that haven't been given the proper (not Proper!) treatment:

Bob Chester
Jan Savitt
Bob Crosby
Teddy Powell
Larry Clinton

I've never seen a legit reissue even on LP by Teddy Powell or Bob Chester. Just bootlegs. Larry Clinton had a few legit reissues on RCA labels. Savitt had one on Decca. And Crosby has had many reissues.

Teddy Powell records never did turn up much when I was collecting 78s. I can't even define his style.

But yeah - box sets would be nice.

Is any of this stuff out on CD?

Another now neglected band is Vaughn Monroe. Although he was a singer, he didn't hog the spotlight and he had some good instrumentals on record. A few made it to LP, but usually it was his vocal stuff that got reissued. Ha! No one wanted instrumentals by a singing bandleader.

If you get a chance, go thru this data base for Bluebird artists from 1939 - 1942. The amount of recordings by bands that have never had legit reissues or that you have never heard of is staggering.

Yup.

They have one Teddy Powell CD and three Larry Clinton CD's and I recommend them all...

Good ol' Alastair Robertson. I knew him casually 'back in the day'. Nice guy.

I don't see a description of what is on the Powell and the Clintons. They were both Bluebird/Victor artists. Are the sides from those sessions or from transcription services like Associated or Muzak or even Thesaurus?

How would you describe the Teddy Powell band?

If there was ever a band that I would describe as playing "Balboa music" it would be Teddy Powell's

That's how I would describe it, haha.
