Does anyone have/play any of his stuff? I heard some of the Nixa Jazz Today Box a couple of years ago at the record store and was really digging it. Unfortunately they didn't have any more copies for sale so it got llost on my wish list for a while. I spotted a copy this morning in Vancouver for half the price of amazon and snapped it up.

There some really good stuff. The first CD is studio recordings, the other 5 are all live. The first track on the first CD is an Ellington composition that hasn't been recorded before along with a cool version of Diga Diga Doo. It's mostly Dixieland/New Orleans/Hot Jazz and blues.

Since most was recorded in the 50's or later, the sound quality is pretty good.

That was Dave Barbour (sp?), the guitarist.

Isn't Chris Barber one of the olde English trad guys from the 50s and 60s?

Yup, he was the brit. Started playing in the late 40's into the 90's.

He married Ottilie Patterson, the vocalist in his group and later divorced her.

Odd. I thought Chris Barber was a smart-ass, uppity-but-bright securities-law attoney in Chicago whom I went up against in some fairly major cases about seven years ago. I thought he was only about 37 at the time; guess I was wrong.

They just had featured him in concert on BET Jazz. It sounded really good.
