A-rick-a-poonie, Phantom Dancers,

It turns out, from stats collected during the recent 2SER Radiothon, that the Phantom Dancer is No. 5 in popularity on 107. 3 2SER Sydney. And congratulations to Ed, a 2SER subscriber since 2002, who won the 2013 Subscriber Drive major prize of a 12 months entertainment package for him and a friend to enjoy.

On this Tuesday's Phantom Dancer, we start out with live radio bop by Bud Powell and Charlie Parker, head to swing with Benny Goodman, 1930s with Hal Kemp and Red Nichols, then 1950s smooth with Frank Sinatra, Patty Ryan and more – all live off the wireless of course. See the play list with the Video of the Week at Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog.

And the Video of the Week? The Jimmy Barnes Story. Take notes! Jimmy's the first character in this made for schools exercise in scape-goating. See it with this week's play list on Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2013 ... nes-story/

Hey, and whaddya know - this is Phantom Dancer post #500

1945 Dinner Party Hijinks

This week I was asked, "play a set of women jazz singers live off vintage radio." So on next Tuesday's Phantom Dancer I will - Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holliday, Dinah Washington and Winnie Brown. How's that!

There's a bit of a personal connection in this for me. I realised after I had made my selections that I have a personal connection with both SV and DW.

One of the Bakelite Broadcasters(my swing / jazz band) double bass players backed both divas on Australian tours. And my vocal mentor booked Ms Vaughan into his New York nightclub many moons ago.

And your Phantom Dancer Video of the Week emphasises the 'Educational' in 2SER Sydney EDUCATIONAL Radio. Watch and learn good manners from this 1945 film about the most fun you can ever politely have at a teen party.

I'll be singing the songs of the 1920s and 1930s with my band Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters (http://www.bakelitejazz.com) this Tuesday.

So I've put together an encore Phantom Dancer presentation for you on 2SER 107.3 this Tuesday 10 December at 12 noon (+11 GMT). You can also hear it online at 2ser.com (http://www.2ser.com). But it means, however, there's no play list. I can tell you though you will hear live off 1940s-1950s radio in the second half of the show, Cootie Williams, Hot Lips Page & Earl 'Fatha' Hines!

BUT - I'll make it up to you with TWO Phantom Dancer Videos of the Week.

The first, Frances Carroll & her Coquettes is a Vitaphone short from the late 1930s. The all-women band play a few Raymond Scott numbers and lots more swing beside. And the band features Viola Smith - the female Gene Krupa - on drums.

Well, Viola Smith turned 101 on 29th November 2013! And your 2nd Phantom Dancer Video of the Week is a fascinating video interview with her by Tom Tom Magazine.

Enjoy both videos on the Greg Poppleton Radio Lounge Blog http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2013 ... one-short/

Season's Greeting Phantom Dancers,

It's been a busy month of live shows for Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters 1920s – 30s trio – sextet wherein I warble, or wobble, but, at last on Christmas Eve, I can get back into the 2SER studios to share some quality time with you.

Tune in. Christmas Eve. Tues 24 December, 12 noon AEDT (+11GMT) 107.3 2SER Sydney and online. It's the first Phantom Dancer of 2014 this Tuesday for you on 107.3 2SER Sydney and online. Swing and jazz from live 1920s-60s radio and TV.

There's a whole 15 minute broadcast for you by electric guitar pioneer Alvino Rey from 1944.

And, an album! From back in the days when an album was an album. When an album looked like a photo album book with brown pages that were actually sleeves containing 78 rpm records. Unlike Greg Poppleton and the Bakelite Broadcasters' latest album Sweet Sue which is a clutter-free digital artefact you can download from Bandcamp http://gregpoppletonandhisbakelitebroad ... dcamp.com/. (What a plug! But it's a doozy of a swing album)

Now back to the album, it's Victor's New Years Eve In New York waxed by the Victor Symphony Orchestra in 1929. Read all the details here http://victor.library.ucsb.edu/index.ph ... n_New_York.

And for your Phantom Dancer Video of the Week. Also from 1929 – Laurel and Hardy – the hilarious 'A Perfect Day.' Enjoy on Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2014 ... ardy-1929/. And tune in next Tuesday or listen online at 2SER.com

We're having a heatwave' – well I'm not playing Heatwave on this Tuesday's Phantom Dancer, 107.3 2SER and online http://www.2ser.com, but I am playing a lot of 'hot' swing and jazz from live 1920s-60s radio and TV for you.

There's a bracket of bop-influenced swing by Benny Goodman, Buddy Morrow and more and even a wedding bracket with Rosemary Clooney, Johnny Guanieri, The Yiddish Swing Orchestra and more. Check out the play list on the blog. Address below.

And for your Phantom Dancer Video of the Week, Dizzy Gillespie and his Orchestra in the film complete with MC, burlesque, singing, ballet and tap dancing – Jivin' In Be-Bop (1947). The highlights are Dizzy Gillespie and singer Helen Humes. The rest is curious. Enjoy on Greg Poppleton's Radio Lounge Blog http://gregpoppleton.wordpress.com/2014 ... len-humes/
