Jimmie Lunceford
I'm looking to get into the Jimmie Lunceford business, and I'd like to get the most and best music for the least money. Could you recommend some CDs? Thanks.

I own 4 Lunceford CD's but 2 I'd really recommend if I had none would be:
1930-1934 - Classics
Lunceford Special - 1939-1940 - Columbia
Luncefords band is amazing. I have about 8 cds and I can listen/dance to them pretty much straight through
The three id recommend:
For Dancers Only
Stomp It Off
Lunceford Special
But buy it all! His band didn't really have the standout soloist like many other great bands from the time, but as a group the swang harder than almost all of them!

Lunceford Rules!!!
Get all 3 cds Mike mentioned. I have them and they are rad. Plus get more Lunceford after that.

There are two Lunceford CDs entitled, "For Dancers Only:" here and here. I also have two Lunceford CDs entitled "Rhythm is Our Business." I even seem to remember running into another "Stomp It Off" CD somewhere.falty411 wrote:The three id recommend:

The "Swingsation" Lunceford compilationis also rather solid all the way through. However, GRP's mastering on "For Dancer's Only" (the big hit song) has those prominent scratches, especially in the beginning. (The same master recording is on "Stomp It Off" (recommended above). The GRP mastering generally is a little bit muddy.
One of the "Rhythm is Our Business" CDs I own (from Living Era records) has a clearer, better-mastered version of "For Dancers Only," plus a great, slightly slower version of "Taint What You Do" than the well-known version. Both versions have more of an early-swing, Pre-Basie, harder, "chonk-chonk" rhythm than the usual versions.

At a recent Exchange, a bunch of the DJs were buying out the local record store, one of them threw this one in my basket and said that it was an essential one that every DJ should have. I already had one Lunceford compilation, but this one helped fill a hole or two in my collection.
Already recommended by Alex, Harrison, and Mike.
I highly recommend it as well.

Re: Jimmie Lunceford
If that is what you are looking for then definitely get the CD that has been recommended here multiple times:Matthew wrote:I'd like to get the most and best music for the least money.
Lunceford Special: 1939-1940
This is a quality remastering job by Columbia, and the track listing is excellent, featuring the bulk of Lunceford tracks that I am likely to play at dances.
Get it, dig it, and then you'll certainly want to pick up the other great suggestions in this thread to expand your Lunceford collection. Both For Dancers Only (I played "Harlem Shout" off of it last night at LindyGroove) and Stomp It Off are great, featuring a slightly earlier part of Lunceford's career (34-37).

I'm starting to notice a pattern.lindyholic wrote:Plus get more Lunceford after that.
The Swingsation album isn't bad either.
Do you heard Ellington´s "Sophisticated Lady" by Lunceford somewhere? It´s absolutely fantastic, I love it. The saxophones are fabulous here. It´s the most beautiful Lunceford´s tape (with "Mood Indigo", of course). I´m czech collector of old discs with jazz and swing from 20s - 40s. If you could talk with me, my mail is Premysl.Hnilicka@tiscali.cz
I just bought Lunceford Special--what fantastic vocalists he managed to get! I also started going through my old Lunceford (Big Band Box Set) and realizing that, though it's not as well mastered, the vocals are of equal quality.
If you feel like you play too much instrumental music because a lot of old vocalists annoy you, buy lots of Lunceford to fix your problem.
