Maybe they're not listening to the song. I have no problems playing it in Dallas. It makes sense to me, I caught it pretty easily the first time. Besides, I can think a half-dozen drum and base solos that wreck a song faster than Jimmy Rushing stretching the vocal.

But you're right - I love to lord my position as unpaid DJ over people who don't really care. As they stumble, I hit unlucky couples with a laser pointer and holler at them on the mic.

lol - looking forward to meeting you in person sometime. I would normally drop this, but since you've overtaken me in total posts, I feel the need to respond. The rest of the cd is pretty normal, no funky tempo changes at all, so I think the blip in Exactly Like You is odd. And I'd rather hear Lionel Hampton sing [the Benny Goodman version is much nicer to me]. But if you are trying to compete with drum and base solos, then you've got me ;-)

Much to my embarrassment, the gap was something like 200 a few months ago. What a joy it is to have gotten a life in the past six months.

Two songs that I can think of off the top of my head...

"I Ain’t Got Nobody" by Basie, off The Golden Years, Vol. 2. The piece (it's an instrumental) is 3:50 long, and is 100 BPM until 2:26, when it shifts to 190 BPM. It sounds pretty natural, though, with Basie sort of oozing into the faster part.

"I've Found a New Baby" by Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang, off Good Enough to Keep. A while back, I posted a clip of the change. The clip starts from the beginning of the piece. I think it's a lot of fun to listen to, though I'm not sure how I would feel as a dancer. I tend to like pretty crazy, playful stuff like that.

"After You've Gone" - Bechet, from Past Perfect's Portrait (CD #6). About 90 for the first 2:00 or so, then the drum solo kicks it up to 285 for the rest, which is about 3:00. That'd spice up a set.

The more I listen to what I call the traditionalists [Eddie Condon, Jack Teagarden, Bechet, Fats Waller] etc. - I think that this must be a familiar arrangement - double time a chorus or two or double time the last 30 seconds. After You've Gone by Eddie Lang/Joe Venuti with Jack Teagarden has the same arrangement - good song to play for the last song of the night.
