Herräng DJ'ing 2017?
Anyone here going? I'll be there week 5. Anyone have up-to-date-ish information on whether they're still taking volunteer DJ's? Last time I went was four or five years ago, and I DJ'ed a bunch. I know they've made some changes, and I don't want to carry my laptop for nothing. :) (Yes, I'll write to ...

Re: mosaic sets
Quite a few sets of definite interest to "us" are threatening to sell out: Classic Earl Hines Sessions 1928-1945 Chick Webb & Ella Fitzgerald Decca Sessions 1934-1941 Eddie Condon & Bud Freeman Complete Commodore & Decca Sessions And, somewhat less interesting but perhaps still...

Re: First time DJing an Exchange
I doubt *no* one will dance (unless you really screwed up and put on Katy Perry or something)... I can only remember fading a song once, and that was early on when I was very inexperienced. Now, I just let the three couples struggle valiantly till the end, and I put on a sure-fire hit afterwards (li...

Re: First time DJing an Exchange
Is it your local exchange, or one you're traveling to? If the latter, ask the organizers for some guidance on the local scene. Also, are you DJ'ing late at night or earlier in the day? Outside on concrete or inside in a ballroom? In general, I think setting any sort of bpm limits isn't a great idea....

Re: Songs for a Graduation?
Where are you that graduation is in April?!? "Doctor Jazz" if your crowd likes the New Orleans/trad feel. In order of comfort level for dancers, I've DJ'ed these before: Louis Armstrong, 1959, "Satchmo Plays King Oliver" Jelly Roll Morton, 1926, any number of places--the JSP set ...

Re: Glen Gray & the Casa Loma Orch.
It's now 11 years later, and I happened upon this thread while looking for something else. And, no, I don't believe those two are the same take. The first difference occurs three seconds in (or 2 and a bit in the faster version): there is a cymbal hit on the Anthology of BBS track, but not on the Bo...

Re: Songs with pronounced/interesting breaks
Two that come to mind immediately: "Harlem Air Shaft", Duke Ellington, 1940, "The Blanton-Webster Band" (or any number of other albums) (or, if you must, the LCJO recording from "Live in Swing City") A bunch of breaks, they're all a little before 1 or 5, if memory serve...

Re: mosaic sets
Here's a fun rumour about a set in the works: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?/topic/80447-teddy-wilson-mosaic/ Teddy Wilson, non-Billie Holiday recordings, 1939-1942. This should pick up around where the Hep releases left off--the last one in that series ("Jumpin' for Joy") is ...

Vocalist on Gordon Webster's "Live at Boston Swing Central"?
Does anyone who has Gordon Webster's "Live at Boston Swing Central" on CD, with liner notes, want to tell me who the vocalists are? In particular, I want to know the male vocalists and on which track they sing.
Thanks in advance.

Sometimes this free site is useful: http://www.redhotjazz.com/ But, really, what you need is this: CD-ROM or website: Tom Lord's "The Jazz Discography" (https://www.lordisco.com/) CD-ROM: Walter Bruyninckx's discography (http://www.worldcat.org/title/93-years-of-recorded-jazz-blues-1917-20...

Bandcamp donating to ACLU today
(I'll risk angering the moderators by placing this here, but I suspect most of the few of you reading will find it worthwhile, regardless of where you live or even of what your political leanings are.) Bandcamp is donating all their proceeds (15% of what you pay--the rest goes to the artist) today t...

Re: Savory Collection Volume 2
I'm particularly enjoying "Rosetta" from Lionel Hampton's jam session (1938-12-28) and intend to play it until dancers around here get thoroughly sick of it.
Then I'll play it some more.
Hire me, I'm awesome.
