Jimmy Dorsey - More good stuff out there?

One of the first swing CDs I ever bought was the Swingsation disc featuring Charlie Barnet & Jimmy Dorsey (GRP, 1999). Every Jimmy Dorsey track is a killer, and the sound is excellent (almost too good - I've been disappointed so many times since then): Stompin' At The Savoy John Silver Don't Be ...

Hint: The best sounding version of the original recording (1939) can be found on The Fabulous Swing Collection

The hifi version from The Everest Years is also suberb (it runs for 7 minutes but I've edited it down to 3:23)

FYI, I have a 3rd album by many of the same folks called Live Echoes Of The Best In BIG BAND BOOGIE. The band's moniker was changed to The Will Bradley Johnny Guarnieri Band. I liked this the least of the 3 by far, but thought some of you might find it interesting to look for it. I doubt it was put...

BTW, thanks to a German friend, I got the discs. And they are really great, especially the second one! May I remind everyone that "Easy Does It" is a good example of the somewhat quirky song structure A-B-A? Speaking of "truly vintage", who prefers to dj Murray's Ragtime Banjo Qu...

There are a few cheap copies available on amazon.de right now: Live Echoes of the Swinging Bands - EUR 11,99 More Live Echoes - EUR 14.99 Unfortunately, they can only be delivered to Germany... :( Can someone from Germany help me out here?? Anyway, next year (or already this year?), these recordings...

The Complete Lionel Hampton Victor Sessions 1937-41 Mosaic set is now available for preorder. It hath arrived! And, it sounds great! :D BTW, there was an annoying mistake on the Hampton set - they included Fiddle-Diddle (no fiddle, but vocals) twice and missed out Fiddle-Dee-Dee (fiddle, no vocals)...

I always thought he said [Nasal, Frankie-Manning-like voice] "You hold up fiiiive fingers in each hand...." But I have no idea what it means... 8)

Re: Jive at Five that doesn't fade out?

It's funny - I was just about to ask if anyone had made a good edit of Jive At Five by Buck Clayton (Mosaic 228) so that I wouldn't have to fade it (it's a tad too long at 9:19...) It's midtempo (165 bpm) but quite energetic so it might work for your routine. It's true that the original 1939 Basie J...

Yeah that's probably it. He's really hammering away in that intro! The same high-pitched sound also returns later between 2:03 and 2:12.

Speaking of Jo Jones, what exactly is the percussion/drumming sound you can hear at the beginning of my fave Count Basie track: Honeysuckle Rose (1937)?

Just because a drummer sucks, or is too modern to understand how to play hi hats right, that's not a reason to tell him not to play hats. The alternative (ride) is one of things that most often makes swing STOP swinging and start grooving - and there's plenty of that out there. Instead its a reason...

And at the seattle exchange I heard once again a song that sounded like all that meat and no potatoes but it was a faster version.. And it didn't have the lyrics in the same place as the popular version.. Anyway it sounded like fats but I wasn't sure.. If you heard a slightly faster version of Meat...

Thanks for the tips. I was mainly thinking about songs that slowly increase their tempo as they progress. Found another good example: Jimmie Lunceford - Harlem Shout (1936): starts at 190 and ends at 225. And Ellington Dim and Cres In Blue picks up quite a bit as it moves along. Hmmm.... my Dim is s...
