Lionel Hampton
I was teasing one of my favorite DJs about his love for Lionel Hampton and I decided I should go back and listen to what I have of his. It is frankly very little of him as a band leader [i.e. I have a lot of his work on Benny Goodman tracks]. I did hear an awesome song on the radio a few weeks back,...

Re: Most Ella Fitzgerald/Chick Webb songs "disposable&q
I think they are referring to songs like the ones on this CD . What do you think about this material? Is it disposable? Perhaps more importantly, is it good to dance to? Them are gold nuggets in Seattle! Maybe not all of them, but eyeballing the list, Dipsy Doodle, Vote for Mr. Rhythm, Undecided, S...

I just got back from the Portland Lindy Exchange, and they did something quite clever; they hired 11 bands for the weekend and gave them all 1 hour sets. I'm not quite sure how they managed the finances; 10 of them were local bands so there was not that much travel; and most of them were small group...

FYI- this is how I categorize my tunes for when I am calling a set of music with my band. I do not make set lists ahead of time- I like to call things as I go depending on the crowd. So I have my songs listed thusly:................. Another thing that I try to do, which is much more difficult with...

What I'm wondering is whether there's any way to devise a tag system that involves this more instinctive aspect, or whether it's better to tag tracks along more quantifiable lines, so I can whittle down to a selection based on those, then let my instincts go to work on the results.... A quick note ...

Thanks so much, I actually don't have some of those. Thanks for the help and does anyone else have any suggestions based off of my list? If you don't have The Fabulous Sidney Bechet [which has Blues my Naughty...] on it, you should get it. The entire CD really swings hard. Another CD that has a gre...

I really don't think there's any substitute for practice - you get used to the 'pressure', the technology, your music, the way dancers respond, etc etc. Is there any way to practice getting used to the pressure APART from doing gigs. Is that what you mean by practice - gigs - or is there an effecti...

I think it's part organization, part experience. I do, now that I'm on a computer, short list - I work ahead 2 or 3 songs, but I've found if I go more than 3 songs I'll lose the flow a bit. As long as you aren't being too distracted I think 3 min is enough time to find the next best song, as long as...
