This isn't an international thread? Best to've specified that. I live in Sydney. This 'scene' uses real Swing music from the 30s and 40s and maybe some Jazz from the 20s? for a range of purposes and in a range of formats (recordings, charts, etc etc) - DJing, dance performances, band charts, etc etc...

Depends on the song... or the particular recording of a song. I'd say some of it swings , some of it... not so much. Grammatically, swing music doesn't need a capital. I tend not to use the phrase 'swing music' because it carries such different connotations, depending on context. I might talk about ...

i like wingy a lot. i have the mosaic louis prima/wingy manone brunswick & vocalion set--it's wonderful. i especially like the harlem hot shots recordings from 1935. I have that set and it's so much fun! I was all "oh no, I don't need another mosaic set" and "lalala" and now...

I don't know those names - where are they from?
Can you tell us more about the radio show, please? I'm curious.

Thanks Russ, Surreal, everyone. I'm not sure if/when I'll upgrade my laptop (we've just repaired/replaced some bits - the 'R' key, some guts, etc), but I'm kind of needing a decent sound card soon... that echoaudio one isn't too expensive (in the grand scheme of things, though I'd like it if our dol...

external (firewire) soundcard for mac

I've had a look through this thread and found that the answers I'm looking for aren't there (or I just don't understand what I'm reading... which is entirely likely) or are out of date. I'm not a hardcore tech-head, so please play nice with your answers: sarcasm will probably make me cry, seeing as ...

In response to remysun, I would contend that the music alone has little to do with getting new dancers in the door. Unless you are doing your advertising on the radio or similar audio-only medium, the music is not what gets new dancers in the door. It's the words and images in print advertising, sp...

Almost off topic, but... I think that live bands are one of _the_ best ways of getting people interested in classes and social dancing. If you can manage to get a class going before a live band gig (either at that venue or near by), then the live band's energy and sheer fun-ness (as well as the fami...

I'm a big fan of Carol Ralph. But I haven't any linkage for her. :( I DJ regularly from her CD 'Swinging Jazz Portrait'. The Rhythmakers' CDs also get quite a bit of play with me. I know you've been chasing some blooz artists Russ - do you have any linkage? [edit]Both the Sweet Lowdowns and Carol Ra...

However they are doing their regular Manchester Lane gig so you could always tell her to request it there. :D
I have to pimp the Lowdowns a little... and add some Rhythmakers linkage.

They're sweet bands!

Something I've always liked as a student , is a teacher with an enthusiasm for their music. It's nice to hear a teacher name the song and artist of the music they're playing in class - it gives students a chance to chase down stuff they hear in class. For many newer dancers this is also the one plac...

So here's a question for the opposite of your situation. Some of our venues tend to have between 20-40 dancers coming out, just because our scene is both small and a college town. How do you keep those people dancing and not let the energy die? We're all friends and have pretty much equivalent tast...
